We are almost at the end of Class One and looking forward to the summer holidays. We decided to finish our project on 'Castles' by having a banquet. Each person designed and made a crown or helmet. We had different foods to eat, including bread rolls which we made ourselves. After our meal we tried to juggle. It was a bit tricky but we had lots of fun!

Do you like our new outdoor suits? We were really lucky to get waterproof coats and breeks to wear when we go outside to learn. Mrs Rendall tested them with the garden hose! We all screamed at her to stop.

What has been happening in Sans Souci?

The school in Sans Souci has had visitors from the United States.

They camped in the school grounds which the school has been trying to improve - just like us!

They are planning to make a mural and have started by getting a wall ready for the picture by painting it with a primer.

They have planted a garden - just like us!

Do you think they will grow the same kind of plants as us?

They also have litter wardens who take responsibility for looking after the school grounds and reminding everyone to put their litter in the right place.

Do you think that is a good idea? Perhaps we could think about doing that.

Tommy and Sally the sea turtles with visitors to the school.

Tommy the sea turtle will be coming for a visit to Orkney. Its a long journey. Look forward to meeting you Tommy! Have a good journey!

On Monday we went to the Bishop's and Earl's Palace in Kirkwall. We looked around all the rooms and found a well which is as old as the Cathedral. We counted lots of fireplaces, some were so big we could hide in them. When we came back to the school we decided to make own own display of a castle with all the furniture inside.

Last Wednesday we had MADD in our school hall. There were lots of different activities to do about the environment. We looked at books, created our own pictures from natural materials and made birds nests. Everyone was very busy.

We got a treat this week when we went into the Pre-School to see two new baby lambs. We learned lots about them and came back to the class and made our own lambs and shelters for them.

Our project at the end of last term was 'Oot and aboot'. We spent alot of time outside in our wellies exploring the school grounds.

We recorded all the things we found. Can you see any signs of spring from your window?

We went to the Peedie Sea with Class 3/4 to plant some new trees. Everyone was very busy but we had to be careful to get the sapling the right way out.

We decided we would like to bake for our Golden Time. We had great fun chopping, mixing and weighing all the ingredients. Everyone had a taste of all our delicious foods!

Class One have had a busy few weeks and have lots of news to share. Keep reading to find out what we have been up to!

We dressed up in our pyjamas to raise money for Haiti. We thought of thoughts of ideas on how we could help and made a list of the things they might need. Hopefully, the money we raised will help to buy some of these items.

As part of our work on International Education we have been learning about folk tales from Orkney. We went to Class 3/4 and listened to some stories in Orkney dialect. We had such fun we have decided to write our own about Magnus the giant and Bobby the trowie.

Our project is all about toys. This week we have been designing and making our own jack in the boxes. We hope they will be completed soon.

We enjoy learning outside. Yesterday we went and had a race and practised our number stories to 8. We all got very excited!

We have been learning about different foods from the Caribbean. We tasted lots of interesting fruits including mango and pineapple. We made a graph about what we liked. Our favourite was banana.

We have been busy celebrating Christmas. On Wednesday we had turkey and all the trimmings. Class one thought it was delicious! Yesterday Santa came to our party and gave us all a present. We played games and had jelly and ice cream. It was great fun! Now are looking forward to our holidays and playing in the snow.

We have just heard that Patrick has arrived safely in Trinidad!
We hope he has a great Christmas holiday in Sans Souci.
I wonder if he will get down to the beach?

We have been making turtles.

Here is a slide show about how we did it.

We watched a video about turtles and talked about how big they were.

We measured the life size model turtle with our feet and ourselves.

They are BIG! Much bigger than us.

We have been learning more about our community. We went to visit the police station. The police officer let us look at the cameras around Kirkwall.

We went to see the room where they take people's fingerprints and the cells. Our favourite part was having a seat in the police car. The siren was very noisy!

We visited the library.

We go there to read books or listen to stories.

Its much bigger than our school library.

We can use the computers.

The view from our window

Class 1 have been thinking about the view from their classroom window.

They have been looking carefully at what you can see when you look out of the windows in our school.

Here they are in the bicycle shelter.

Which classroom are they looking into?

We can see the nursery play area and the willows at the front of the school.

Across the road and beyond the grass we can see the ships and ferries come into the pier.

From the windows at the front of the school we can see the Peedie Sea, the power station, the library, the bowling alley, and towering above all of these is St Magnus Cathedral.
